Shillong: Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt. Ltd. (LUMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd. Bangladesh, observed World Environment Day at Nongtrai and Shella.
A number of activities were organized to mark this special day. On June 5, a competition was organized at Nongtrai Village where participants had to present models based on the theme ‘Environment’. Kitbiang Skhemlon topped the list with his creation and won the first prize. There were also quiz competitions for the junior and senior students based on the 2012 environment theme, ‘Green Economy: Does it include you?’
In the evening of the same day more than 200 saplings were planted and around 2000 saplings were distributed in the village.
The next day, the celebration commenced at Shella village with the participation of students and community people including the Dorbar members. The day-long programme included cleaning drive, prize distribution for the quiz competition and speeches on environmental awareness from different speakers. Likewise at Shella village, thousands of tree saplings were distributed among more than 400 households. The event was graced by the local MLA and former Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy.
